How does the body “detox”? Why do we even care???

This past weekend I attended a health conference where I learned the importance of our bodies “detox” process and why diabetes, heart disease and dementia are on the rise.  The cause ? The  environmental toxins that bombard us every day.  When we lived in caves, and foraged, our bodies were not exposed to the inordinate deluge of toxins.

How does the body detox?

Our bodies have an extraordinary internal detoxification system. Here’s a brief look at three critical organs involved:

Organs

  • The Liver: Your first line of defense against toxins is your liver, which acts like a filter in preventing toxic substances contained in foods from passing into your blood stream.
  • The Colon: This organ has bacteria that produce both healthy and unhealthy chemicals. You want to keep your colon flowing regularly since its main role is to flush out toxic chemicals before they can do you any harm.
  • The Kidneys: Like clockwork, the kidneys are constantly filtering your blood and getting rid of toxins in the form of urine.  Adequate hydration is key in  allowing the kidneys to do their job.

 

For a detox program to truly work, you need to maintain these three key organs by nourishing your body with the right nutrients.   To allow the body to flush out toxins we need to be properly hydrated.  In the CBS system, it is recommended to drink water amount equal to ½ of your body weight for the 10 days.  All of the nutrients that your body needs are contained in the 6-9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with the critical components contained in the Clean and Shape.  The purpose of the Burn is to help maintain stable blood sugar levels during this detox process.
